In North India including Punjab, November is the time when winter season sets in. Most workers go to bed early after
their days toil. The evening of November 30,1992 was no different for the farm labour - migrated from other states - of
village Silo Kalan, PS Dehlon, till 7,O'clock. It was the time when three terrorists carrying AK-47 rifles started
forcing 17 labourers at gun point into an 80 sq.ft. tubewell room. When all the workers were stuffed in to that small
room, the terrorists started firing on them mercilessly, killing all of them. The objective of such killings was not
only to spread terror, but also to disrupt the economy of the state. For, Punjab's rich farmers are mostly dependent on
migrated labour from other state for crops sowing and harvesting. Thousands of poor workers come to Punjab for earning
their livelihood through farm labour. And mostly such labourers are the sole earners for their families staying in their
home towns. Killing one such worker means the genocide of an entire family. Perhaps, the killers didn't realise.
