June 15, 1991 is considered to be the blackest day in the history of Punjab terrorism, when militants gunned down 82 passengers in two different trains at Baddowal and Quila Raipur, near Ludhiana. As many as 50 innocent people were killed and 30 injured in the Baddowal shoot-out. At about 9:45 PM, the militants pulled the chain and brought the train to a halt. They entered different compartments and started spraying bullets on the passengers. In the second incident at Quila Raipur, the militants after boarding the train at 10:15 PM, picked out certain passenger on the pretext of kidnapping them. Instead started firing on them from a point blank range. Over 30 passengers were killed in this incident.
