In order to create terror among the general public, the Punjab terrorists had been using various means. And, in this incident, the terrorists chose the holy city Amritsar, where the biggest sikh shrine - the Golden Temple - is situated. On December 30, 1988, at 8.00 A.M. - a winter morning - one Harkishen Singh of Sharifpura, Amritsar informed the police that a canister was hanging on an unclaimed bicycle near his house. He was apprehensive that it was carrying a bomb. When the police party reached the spot and started investigating, there was a sudden explosion in that canister. It was a powerful bomb blast, in which three persons lost their lives on the spot, and later many persons died in the hospital. A number of people got injured in the blast.
